Unemployment rate rises to 13% in January

2011-02-23

The registered unemployment rate stood at 13% in January, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This was 0.7 p.p. higher than the month before and 0.1 p.p. more than a year earlier.

In the analysed period, almost 2.11 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 150,300 in relation to one month earlier and up by 52,500 compared with January 2010. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (21.1%), Zachodniopomorskie (18.5%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (17.4%), Lubuskie (16.7%) and Podkarpackie (16.4%). The lowest rates were recorded in Mazowieckie and Wielkopolskie (9.8%), Slaskie (10.6%) and Malopolskie (11%).

Meanwhile, GUS data showed a marked decline in the scale of redundancy plans reported by employers to labour offices compared with December, but an increase in yearly terms. Thus, at the end of January 232 companies were declaring an intention to cut 29,500 jobs (including 19,600 in the public sector). This compares to 315 firms and 43,200 jobs (29,800 in the public sector) in December, and 216 companies and 27,700 jobs (12,600 in the public sector) in January 2010.

The number of job offers submitted to labour offices in January, at 46,600, was 4% higher than the month before but down by 22.8% y-o-y.

In our view, the rise in the registered unemployment rate recorded in January had a seasonal character, caused by last month's wintry weather and the resulting suspension of outdoor business activity. We forecast that at the end of 2011 the official jobless rate will amount to 10.9%.
