3M to create R&D facility in Wroclaw

2011-02-09

3M, the US diversified industrial group, plans to hire 100 researchers at its expanding manufacturing complex in Wroclaw over the next few years, as part of plans to give its Polish operations an important R&D role, Xavier Douellou, the recently-appointed head of 3M Poland, said in an interview with Puls Biznesu.

The company, which has so far invested $225m (approx. €166m) in Poland, has made Wroclaw one of its 10 global “super hubs”. The objective is for the Polish facility to account for 70% of the group's total production intended for the markets of Central and Eastern Europe. So far the focus has been on manufacturing and engineering services, but now 3M wants to create a local R&D centre to develop new products tailored to the needs of customers in the region. By the end of the year it will employ 24 researchers, rising to about 100 over the coming years.

In November 3M announced two new manufacturing projects in Wroclaw. One is a PLN 63m (€16.1m) factory of catalytic converter gaskets, which is scheduled to start operations by mid-2011. The other is a PLN 173.4m (€44.3m) factory of components for the electrical, aviation and wind energy sectors, such as resins, glues and tapes.

The Wroclaw complex consists of several production plants making products for the medical, industrial and aviation sectors.
