Sumitomo to close remaining Polish plant by mid-2011

Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems (SEWS), a Japanese maker of automotive wiring components, will complete its exit from Poland with the closure of its factory of electrical wiring harness systems in Leszno (Wielkopolskie voivodship) at the end of June, Rzeczpospolita reported. Nearly 1,000 jobs will go as a result.

The company explained that production of electrical wiring harness systems in Leszno will have to stop in less than five months as the car for which they are meant ceases to be produced, whereas the plant’s other production activities have become unprofitable. The manufacturing equipment will therefore be moved to Romania, leaving just 50 workers at the facility to work on design and logistics. First redundancy notices will be issued next month.

In 2009 SEWS closed down a factory of automotive wiring components in Rawicz (Wielkopolskie) and relocated part of the operations to Romania, resulting in the loss of 900 jobs.
