PAIiIZ-piloted FDI up sharply in January

2011-02-03

The Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ) finalised foreign direct investment (FDI) projects worth €284m in January, a three-fold increase compared with the same period a year ago, Rzeczpospolita reported. The new investments are expected to generate 1,100 new jobs.

According to information obtained by the newspaper, in two weeks’ time the Agency will to announce an investment project worth over PLN 500m (approx. €128m) from a large Western European manufacturer of construction materials.

There are other signs of a possible rebound in FDI activity. The Katowice Special Economic Zone (KSSE) is in talks with two automotive companies, one from India and one with German-US capital, about projects with combined value of over PLN 1bn (€255m). China’s Sany, one of the leading global makers of heavy construction machinery, declared an intention to locate a factory near Warsaw, whereas Shanghai Electric is considering to locate production of parts for wind turbines in Poland. And consultancy firms report that Poland is in contention for several very large investment projects, according to Rzeczpospolita.

The automotive sector, and manufacturing more generally, are expected to account for the largest chunk of FDI inflows in 2011. Companies from Asia, and particularly China, will gain in prominence among foreign companies investing in Poland.
