Jeronimo Martins to invest PLN 1.5bn in 2011 on new stores, distribution centres


Jeronimo Martins (JM), the Portuguese retail group, announced plans to open about 200 new Biedronka discount stores and two distribution centres in Poland in 2011. The value of this year’s investment programme is estimated at PLN 1.5bn (approx. €386m).

JM will thus maintain the rapid pace of expansion of its Polish store network this year, after adding 197 new Biedronka outlets in 2010 to take the total number of stores in the chain to 1,649. The company also upheld its plan to have 3,000 Biedronka stores by 2015, thanks mainly to organic growth, although acquisitions are not ruled out.

The exact location of the two new distribution centres has not been determined yet, but the objective will be to strengthen JM’s logistics base in Central Poland and the Silesia region. In 2010 the Portuguese group also opened two new centres, in Koszalin (Pomorskie voivodship) and Skarbimierz (Opolskie voivodship).

Biedronka is the jewel in JM’s crown. In 2010 the discount retailer generated sales revenues of PLN 19.2bn (€4.8bn).
