Randstad: Polish workers’ optimism could add to wage pressure

Polish workers remain pretty confident about their jobs and overall labour market situation, which could put companies in Poland under increasing wage pressure in the coming months as more staff begin actively seeking new employment opportunities, according to the Randstad Work Monitor, an international quarterly survey by the global employment firm.

The percentage of Polish workers who feel they are at a high or medium risk of job loss, at 9% and 19%, respectively, was broadly unchanged from three months earlier (and close to the international average). At the same time, 70% Poles were confident they would be able to find a comparable job within six months if necessary, and as much as 81% said they would be able to find some job during that period, again roughly the same as three months earlier. Poles thus continue to display above-average optimism about job-seeking (the averages for all the 26 countries covered by the survey were 62% and 68%, respectively).

At the same time, a full 73% of the respondents said they expected a salary increase and an improvement in overall working conditions in 2011. These expectations are supported by a positive assessment on the part of respondents of their employers’ economic situation, with 73% describing it as “good” and 63% saying it improved during 2010. Last year, roughly one in two of the respondents received some rise in basic pay.

The share of workers actively seeking new jobs was 13%, whereas the number of those ready to accept a new job offer reached 70%, broadly the same as in the previous survey.

The Polish leg of the survey was carried out between 3 and 17 November 2010 on a sample of 405 workers, aged 18-64 and working a minimum of 24 hours per week in a paid job (excluding the self-employed).
