PAIiIZ: more Chinese investors eyeing investments in Poland

The Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ) is reporting growing interest among Chinese companies in investing in Poland, helped by the World Expo in Shanghai last year. In the second week of January the Agency was in talks with 12 Chinese investors about investment projects worth a combined €539m and the potential to create over 3,800 jobs, propelling China to third place among the countries of origin of the 148 potential investors currently in negotiations with the PAIiIZ. Chinese firms are also considering a wider array of strategies, including not just direct investments but also joint-ventures and mergers and acquisitions, the Agency says. They are focusing on sectors such as electronics, automotive, machinery, white goods, IT and new technologies, as well as logistics and infrastructure.

One of the Chinese companies seriously contemplating an investment in Poland is Sany, one of the leading global makers of heavy construction machinery. PAIiIZ president Slawomir Majman revealed that the company declared an intention to locate a factory near Warsaw. The value of the project could reach $50m (approx. €37m). Negotiations are expected to be finalised by the end of June.

Meanwhile, deputy economy minister Rafal Baniak said after a recent visit to Beijing that CNR Cargo Wagon, a joint venture of PKP Cargo and Jinan Railway Vehicles Equipment, a Chinese maker of railway vehicles and equipment, could launch production of carriages for European markets in Szczecin (Zachodniopomorskie voivodship) already in March.
