Unemployment rate rises to 11.7% in November

The registered unemployment rate stood at 11.7% in November, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This was 0.2 p.p. higher than the month before and 0.3 p.p. up on a year ago.

In the analysed period, just under 1.86 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 39,700 in relation to one month earlier and up by 47,200 compared with November 2009. The highest unemployment rates were registered in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (19%), Zachodniopomorskie (16.6%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (15.7%), Podkarpackie (15.1%) and Lubuskie (14.9%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (8.7%), Mazowieckie (9%), Slaskie (9.6%) and Malopolskie (9.9%).

Meanwhile, GUS data showed an increase in the scale of redundancy plans reported by employers to labour offices (particularly in the public sector), both in monthly and yearly terms; at the same time, the number of submitted job offers, while smaller than in October, was higher than a year ago.

Thus, at the end of November 445 companies were declaring an intention to cut 46,900 jobs (including 30,600 in the public sector). This compares to 478 firms and 43,400 jobs (25,500 in the public sector) at the end of October, and 460 companies and 35,700 jobs (14,800 in the public sector) a year earlier. The number of job offers submitted to labour offices in November, at 61,300, was 31% lower than in October but up by 11.9% versus November 2009.

According to our estimates, at the end of 2010 the registered unemployment rate amounted to 12.1%. We expect a seasonal drop in labour demand in the next few months, but in the latter part of the year the jobless rate should fall to just below 11%.
