Poland climbs to 23rd in EU on GDP per capita

Thanks to Poland’s resilient economic growth, the country’s GDP per capita (adjusted for purchasing power standards, PPS) reached 61% of the EU average at the end of 2009, up from 56% a year earlier, according to latest data from Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office. It was the biggest gain among EU countries, and came on the back of 1.7% GDP growth in 2009, even as all other Member States sank into recession and the EU economy as a whole contracted by 4.2%.

Poland has now overtaken Latvia and Lithuania to move into 23rd place among the Union’s 27 economies, within just three points of Estonia and four points of Hungary. Slovakia and the Czech Republic rank much higher, however, with GDP per capita at 73% and 82% of the EU average at the end of 2009, respectively, following one-point gains from 2008.
