Deloitte: bullish moods in Poland’s automotive sector

Seventy-five percent of automotive firms in Poland plan new investments in 2011, and one in three expects to add new jobs next year, according to a survey by Deloitte. The study shows that overall sentiment in the sector is highly positive, with 55% of companies predicting an increase in sales and revenues during the next six months.

According to Marek Turczynski, head of Deloitte’s audit unit, it is particularly significant that the upbeat moods among car firms in Poland are based on underlying market conditions, and do not depend on generous discounts offered to buyers of new cars, as in many other countries.

The report also shows that 2010 has been a good year for Poland’s automotive firms, with 57% saying their business has grown in the months since January (significantly so according to 22% of the respondents). Just 5% reported a substantial reduction in activity.

By contrast, automotive firms in Poland are rather pessimistic about the legal environment, with 62% expecting the policies of tax authorities to become more restrictive in 2011, and 71% describing as unlikely the prospect that the government will implement some form of incentives for the automotive sector (even though e.g. incentive schemes for new car buyers would help the sector, according to 76% of the surveyed companies).

The study is based on interviews with senior executives at 77 automotive companies in Poland. They were carried out between 6 September and 26 November 2010.
