Poland to lobby Brussels for extending lifetime of Special Economic Zones

Poland has entered into talks with the European Commission about extending until 2025 the life of the country’s 14 Special Economic Zones (SEZ), Iwona Chojnowska-Hapnik, director of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency (PAIiIZ)’s FDI department has revealed.

The news coincided with the publication of the findings of a new poll of SEZ investors by Deloitte. It showed that 27.7% of the companies in the zones have yet to realise any financial benefits from locating their business there, and just 23.5% can expect to utilise their state-aid limit to the full before the zones disappear at the end of 2020. This also means that unless their life is extended, new investors in the zones may struggle to secure positive returns from their investments.
