Constitutional Court has new chief

President Bronislaw Komorowski on 3 December appointed Prof. Andrzej Rzeplinski as the new chairman of the Constitutional Court. Mr. Rzeplinski, a leading human rights lawyer and former long-time senior member of the Helsinki Committee of Human Rights in Poland, has already sat on the Court since 2007. His term expires in December 2016.

The Court also has a new deputy chairman in Prof. Stanislaw Biernat.

The appointments came a week after the Sejm voted to approve three new members of the Court to replace retiring ones. However, one vacancy is yet to be filled, meaning that the Court will for some time work with 14 members instead of 15.
