Registered unemployment rate steady at 11.5% in October

The registered unemployment rate stood at 11.5% in October, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This was unchanged from the previous month and 0.4 p.p. higher than in the corresponding period of 2009.

In the analysed period, just under 1.82 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of about 6,000 in relation to one month earlier and up by 74,300 compared with October 2009. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (18.7%), Zachodniopomorskie (16.1%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (15.3%), Podkarpackie (14.8%) and Lubuskie (14.7%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (8.6%), Mazowieckie (8.9%), Malopolskie and Slaskie (9.6%).

Meanwhile, GUS data showed an annual increase in the scale of redundancy plans reported by employers to labour offices, but also a rise in job offers. Thus, at the end of October 478 companies were declaring an intention to cut 43,400 jobs (including 25,500 in the public sector). This compares to 522 firms and 43,900 jobs (26,000 in the public sector) at the end of September and 509 companies and 38,100 jobs (15,000 in the public sector) a year earlier. At the same time, the number of job offers submitted to labour offices in October, at 88,800, was 10.3% lower than in September but up by 17.3% against a year ago.

We expect a seasonal drop in labour demand in the coming months. We forecast that by the end of the year the registered unemployment rate will approach 12%.
