US clothing maker to shut Lodz factory

VF, the US maker of jeanswear and other lifestyle apparel, will close down its factory in Lodz by the middle of 2011, Dorota Szczepanska, director of the plant, told Polish Press Agency. A total of 1,100 jobs will go, starting in January. The company will retain 40 staff in Lodz, who will be responsible for repairs of its outdoor clothing.

Ms. Szczepanska explained that the decision was necessitated bytrends in the European clothing market, which required more flexible, shorter-series production arrangements and rendered large, in-house manufacturing facilities such as the one in Lodz too costly.

The Lodz plant was built at a cost of €6m.
