Poland improves score on ease of paying taxes

2010-11-22

Poland has advanced 30 places to 121st in the world in terms of the ease of paying taxes, according to Paying Taxes 2011, an annual publication by the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The report ranks 183 economies according to the cost of taxes paid by companies and the administrative burden of tax compliance, as measured by three sub-indicators. Thus, the total tax rate – the total impact of taxes and contributions on a company’s income statements – is 42.3% in Poland (unchanged from last year), which is lower than the global average of 47.8%, and gives the country 102nd place in the world, slightly lower than in 2009. Furthermore, the total number of tax payments made by firms in Poland fell below the global average (which is now 30), to 29, enough to push the country to 94th place, from 129th last year. The country also made significant progress on the other measure of tax-compliance burden, i.e.: the time needed to comply with tax regulations, which shrank to 325 hours from 395 in 2009. This gave the country 136th place, up from 155th in 2009, but was still way below par, which is 282 hours.

Maldives retained the top spot in the ranking this year, followed by Qatar and Hong Kong. Belarus came bottom, same as in 2009.
