Inflation quickens to 2.8% y-o-y in October


The consumer price index (CPI) amounted to 2.8% y-o-y in October, a substantial acceleration compared with the previous month, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. The result was in line with market expectations.

The highest increase in the 12 months to October was noted in transport (a category that includes car fuel) and in food and non-alcoholic beverages, where prices rose by 4.9% y-o-y and 4.8% y-o-y, respectively, followed by housing and energy (up by 4.2% y-o-y). Prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products were up by 3.3% y-o-y, in health and in hotels & restaurants they were up by around 3% y-o-y, and in education by 2.4% y-o-y. By contrast, clothing and footwear prices were down by 3% y-o-y, communication charges dropped by 1.6% y-o-y, while prices in recreation and culture slipped 1% y-o-y.

On a month-on-month basis, the CPI was 0.5%.

In the first 10 months of the year consumer prices rose by 2.5% y-o-y.
