In the first half of 2010 the number of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) involving Polish companies increased by 15.5% y-o-y, and their combined value rose by 41.7% y-o-y, according to DealWatch, a specialist news service on M&A deals.
During the analysed period, there were 283 publicly announced mergers and acquisitions in Poland, up from 245 in H1 2009. Their overall value increased, to €5.1bn from €3.6bn. The sectors which attracted the largest number of deals were construction & real estate, manufacturing, and IT, communications, media & entertainment. The biggest transaction was PGE's purchase from the Ministry of Treasury of 15% of the shares in PGE Energia for more than €800m.
Poland accounted for one third of M&A activity (in terms of volume) in the Central and Eastern Europe region in the first half of the year, which saw 869 publicly-announced transactions worth €10bn (in value terms the country’s share exceeded 50%).
