Poland to get €1bn extra from EU in 2011-2013
2010-02-28
Poland could receive at least €1bn in extra EU cohesion funds over 2011-2013, to reflect higher-than-expected rate of GDP growth after 2005, Janusz Lewandowski, the EU’s budget and financial affairs commissioner, said on 25 February.
When EU countries negotiated the 2007-2013 budget in 2005, Poland disputed Brussels’ estimates of its GDP growth in the years ahead (on which allocations are based). The Commission pledged to conduct a review in 2010 and to allocate extra funds to new member states that achieve higher-than-expected growth. Latest estimates show that the money – €3bn in total – will be distributed between three countries, the other two being Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
