2010-02-22
Poland claimed half of the top ten positions in Eastern European Regions of the Future 2010/2011, part of an annual ranking by
fDi Magazine, a publication of the Financial Times group. Warsaw came second among top 10 Eastern European cities, only behind Bucharest.
Among top regions, Mazowieckie came fourth, while the places sixth through ninth were occupied by Slaskie, Malopolskie, Dolnoslaskie and Wielkopolskie. The winners were the regions around Bucharest, Prague, as well as Kozep-Magyaroyrsag in Hungary. Furthermore, Malopolskie scored second and Wielkopolskie fourth in Eastern Europe in a new ranking of best foreign direct investment (FDI) promotion strategy.
At the same time, Polish cities and regions fared poorly in the overall European rankings. None made it to the top 25 of Europe's regions of the future or the top 25 of the regions with best FDI strategy. The highest ranking city, Warsaw, came only 22
nd among European cities of the future.
The rankings are based on an evaluation of cities’ and regions’ performance on six criteria: economic potential, human resources, cost effectiveness, quality of life, infrastructure and business friendliness.
