Employment down by 1.4% y-o-y in January

Average monthly employment in the enterprise sector amounted to just over 5.3m people in January, a drop of 1.4% compared with a year earlier, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result was above market expectations, which were for a decline of 2% y-o-y. On a month-on-month basis employment edged up by 0.9%.
During the analysed period, there were approximately 46,400 more people in employment compared with December. In the 12 months up to January, average employment in the enterprise sector has shrunk by about 72,700.
In 2009 average monthly employment in the enterprise sector decreased by 1.2%.
