Poland tops EU on new-job announcements in Q4

Large companies in Poland announced the creation of more new jobs in the fourth quarter of 2009 than their counterparts in any other EU country, according to the latest edition of the
European Restructuring Monitor Quarterly, a publication by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (Eurofund), a body of the EU. The foundation tracks major redundancy and job-creation announcements by companies in EU member states.
Over 7,800 new jobs were announced by major companies in Poland in Q4, more than double the figure in second-placed Great Britain (3,870) or Slovakia in third (1,911). Next in line were Belgium, France, and Romania.
Plaza Centers, the property developer, which announced the employment of 2,000 people at a new shopping mall in Suwalki (Podlaskie voivodship) in the first half of 2010, was the biggest case of announced job creation in the EU recorded by Eurofund in Q4. Alior Bank came fourth with a pledge to fill 1,000 new jobs.
At the same time, Poland ranked fifth in terms of announced job losses in Q4 (6,100).
