EIB to invest record €5-6bn in Poland in 2009
2009-04-17
The European Investment Bank (EIB) will lend at least €5-6bn for projects in Poland in 2009, i.e. double the amount provided last year and an all-time high, EBI vice president Marta Gajecka said at a news conference on 16 April.
She added that the lending will be directed toward sectors such as transport infrastructure (roads and railways), energy and environmental protection, as well as at small and medium enterprises. Importantly, the money will also help support lending by commercial banks, because in the case of projects worth up to €25m, the EBI funds will be channelled via the banking sector through interbank credit lines.
The increase in EBI funding for projects in the country is part of the bank’s efforts to support economic growth in the EU in the face of the economic downturn. The EBI has invested a total of €18.3bn in Poland since 1990.
