GlaxoSmithKline transfers part of production to Poland

A pharmaceutical concern, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced that it is to invest PLN 88m (approximately €22m) in Poznan this year. In Poznan GSK will produce four new drugs and create 69 new jobs. The factory will also take over the function of supplying world markets with all GSK antiretroviral drugs used in HIV/AIDS therapy.
In 2005 the company invested PLN 34m in Poland, including new storage areas for refrigerating medicines. Since 1998 GSK has invested some €330m in the purchase, modernisation and development of the Poznan factory. GSK has an 8% share of the Polish market in terms of value. In Poland GSK employs 1,620 people, of whom 700 work at the Poznan factory.

Last week Rzeczpospolita reported that pharmaceutical companies such as Pliva, IVAX and Sanitas are also planning to move part of their production to Poland. This is because of Poland’s very attractive location in the region and the promising size of the Polish drugs market.
