Planet Retail reports that a decision on who will buy Metro Group’s DIY chain Praktikerwill be made by the end of the year. Praktiker’s chief, Wolfgang Werner, is reported to have said that bidders are lining up to buy the network. He says it is seen as attractive due to its growth potential in Eastern Europe. As reported in Retail Update Poland No. 24(115), Metro Group was to review its strategic options for its home improvement and DIY sales division. Apart from the divestment, the listing of a majority stake via an IPO and the continuing development of Praktiker within the group are being considered. Praktiker is one of the leading European DIY operators. It ended 2004 with sales of around €3bn and an operating profit of €59m. In Poland the unit manages 16 stores, with the next one being built in Warsaw's CH Okecie. The outlet, to be launched later this month, will be the first ever two-floored Praktiker.
