Poland now among the big players

Poland is one the most attractive locations for foreign investments in Europe, according to a recent report entitled "The 2005 European Attractiveness Index" presented at the World Investors' Conference in La Baule in France. The Report was prepared by consulting firm Ernst&Young on the basis of a telephone survey conducted in March and April 2005 among 650 directors of international corporations. In their opinion, Western Europe remains the most interesting region in economic terms, but Central and Eastern Europe and China are clearly increasing their appeal. In the global investment attraction index, Western Europe scored 63 points, Central and Eastern Europe - 55, and China - 52. In 2004, 31% of all foreign direct investment (FDI) in Europe went to Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. more than to France, Germany, Spain and Belgium combined. In the case of production location, Central Europe far outstrips other regions of the globe, with 30% of  the respondents seeing it as an attractive place, ahead of China in second place with 23%.

"Poland has clearly become one of the leading players," claims Ernst & Young, pointing out that the country scored particularly well in terms of wage costs, potential labour productivity growth and access to convenient locations. It was also seen as the most preferred location for launching new projects or developing current ones  - 16% of the respondents said this was the case, while Russia, in second place, scored 10%. Meanwhile, when it comes to foreign firms entering the local market and creating new jobs Poland lies only behind Great Britain in this respect. It is also one of the most attractive locations in Europe for projects in the motoring sector. According to the Ernst & Young report, potential savings to be made from transferring production from Germany to a country such as Poland may reach as much as 85-90%.
