High wage growth in June

The average gross wage in the enterprise sector amounted to nearly PLN 2,512 (€619) in June 2005, i.e. 4.5% higher than a year ago and 3.7% more than in May. Such high wage growth surprised analysts who had expected this figure to be smaller. Such a significant upward trend may be a delayed reaction to inflation growth after Poland's entry to the European Union. Moreover, last year Polish enterprises registered a rise in output without any significant increase in employment levels. This may also be due to the fact that employers have decided to pay their workforce more generously.

Average employment in the enterprise sector amounted to close to 4.8 million people, i.e. 1.7% more than a year ago and 0.3% up on May 2005.
