Unemployment rate up to 14.4% in February

The registered unemployment rate stood at 14.4% at the end of February, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is up by 0.2 p.p. over January and 1 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, nearly 2.34 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 41,000 in relation to one month earlier and of 168,500 compared with February 2012.

The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (22.5%), Zachodniopomorskie (19.3%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (19.1%), Podkarpackie (17.1%), Lubuskie (17%) and Swietokrzyskie (16.8%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (10.9%), Mazowieckie (11.6%), Slaskie (12.1%), and Malopolskie (12.6%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a marked increase in the number of job offers submitted by employers to labour offices, both on a monthly and yearly basis (82,800 offers, up from 64,000 in January and compared with 60,800 in February 2012).

But planned redundancies also went up. At the end of February 442 companies were declaring an intention to cut 34,300 jobs in the near future through mass lay-offs, including 6,500 in the public sector. This compares to 289 firms and 22,000 jobs (6,900 in the public sector) a year earlier and 361 firms and 29,600 jobs (7,500 in the public sector) at the end of January.
