Retail sales down by 0.8% y-o-y in February


Retail sales at current prices decreased by 0.8% y-o-y in February, having risen by 3.1% the month before, according to data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS). The result is below market expectations, which were for a slight increase of 0.4% y-o-y.

In comparison with the corresponding period of 2012, sales were down in four of the main branch specialisations and up in four. The biggest drop was noted in sales of fuels (down by 7% y-o-y), followed by other retail sale in non-specialised stores (down by 5.2% y-o-y), sales of newspapers, books and other sale in specialised stores (down by 3.9% y-o-y) and motor vehicles, motorcycles and parts (down by 1.1% y-o-y).

On the other hand, sales of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and orthopaedic equipment went up by 10.8% y-o-y, textiles, clothing and footwear by 6.8% y-o-y, furniture, radio, TV and household appliances by 5.3% y-o-y, and food, beverages and tobacco products by 1.8% y-o-y.

In the first two months of 2013 retail sales in Poland grew by 0.6% y-o-y.
