Sharp cuts a fifth of its Ostaszewo workforce

Sharp has reached agreement with trade unions about the axing of 211 jobs, or about 20% of the workforce, at its plant in Ostaszewo near Torun (Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship). The company cited a substantial fall in demand for its products. At the same time it declared that no further cuts were planned this year.

In January Sharp asked for the plant, which currently employs 1,070 people, to be deregistered from the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone. Its problems have already led to job cuts at two local suppliers, Sumika Electronic Materials Poland and Orion Electric Poland.
