Randstad/TNS OBOP: better employment prospects


Nineteen percent companies in Poland plan to add new jobs during the next six months, according to a new wave of a tracker poll of 300 employers by Randstad and TNS OBOP. This is up four points from three months earlier, when the figure touched a two-year low. At the same time, the proportion of firms planning to shed jobs over this period declined four points to 15%, pushing the balance of hiring/firing expectations back into positive ground. The vast majority still expect to keep staff levels unchanged, however (61%, down one).

The outlook for hiring continues to vary considerably between sectors. The highest percentage of firms planning to hire new workers over the next six months was found in construction (29%, with the balance of +14 points), followed by financial intermediation services (24%, +10) and manufacturing (20%, +5). The highest share of firms planning to reduce headcount was found in transport, warehousing and communication, where not a single firm said it would add jobs (35%, -35).

At the same time, the number of respondents expecting to raise wages in the next six months almost halved to 11%. Fully 80% of the surveyed companies see wages remaining at their current level over this period (up from 65%), with 5% expecting to cut wages.

Meanwhile, employers’ views about the general economic outlook improved, with fewer expecting the economy to slip into recession (24%, down from 32%). Most are expecting stagnation (57%, up from 50%), with the proportion of firms predicting the economy to grow during the next six months at 8%, unchanged from three months earlier.

The survey was conducted between 2 and 12 February 2013 among companies employing 10 and more people.
