Registered unemployment rate up to 14.2% in January


The registered unemployment rate stood at 14.2% at the end of January, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is up by 0.8 p.p. over December and 1 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, nearly 2.3 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 158,900 in relation to one month earlier and of 174,200 compared with January 2012.

The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (22.2%), Zachodniopomorskie (19.1%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (18.9%), Podkarpackie (17%), Lubuskie (16.9%) and Swietokrzyskie (16.7%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (10.6%), Mazowieckie (11.4%), Slaskie (11.9%), and Malopolskie (12.3%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a marked increase in the number of job offers submitted by employers to labour offices, both on a monthly and yearly basis (64,000 offers, up from 35,700 in December and 49,000 in January 2012).

At the end of January 361 companies were declaring an intention to cut 29,600 jobs in the near future through mass lay-offs, including 7,500 in the public sector, compared with 249 firms, 20,200 jobs (5,800 in the public sector) in the same period a year ago.
