ArcelorMittal investing €100m in Polish operations

ArcelorMittal, the world’s biggest steel company, is conducting or planning investment projects at its Polish factories worth in excess of €100m between them, Sanjay Samaddar, CEO of ArcelorMittal Poland, told Puls Biznesu. The group, which recently announced capacity reductions in several countries in Europe, such as France, Belgium, Luxembourg or Bosnia and Herzegovina, has no such plans in Poland, where operations are being modernised and even expanded.

The €100m figure includes €58m worth of investment projects announced in September 2012. At the heart of this ongoing programme are a €36m project to build a new production line for making 120-metre rails at ArcelorMittal’s Dabrowa Gornicza plant, and the construction of a sheet piles service centre. But the group is also planning to modernise another of its Polish furnaces, a constant steel founding line and a converter. And it is contemplating the relocation to Poland of some production operations from Ostrava in the Czech Republic, e.g. steel profiles, according to unofficial information.

Annual output at ArcelorMittal’s Polish mills is 3.5 million tonnes, down from 5 million before the crisis, but the group is investing to prepare for an anticipated recovery.
