Ipsos: consumer confidence rises in January

The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) gained four points in January, to 76 points, according to research conducted by Ipsos.

All the component indicators of the CCI improved in January, led by the economic climate indicator, which gauges opinions about the domestic economy and outlook. It surged by 6.4 points in the first month of the year, to 61.6 points. The current indicator, which reflects sentiment about the present state of the economy and the financial situation of the respondent’s household, also posted a major gain of 5.2 points, to 65.8 points.

The willingness-to-buy indicator rose by 2.5 points to reach 85.6 points, and the expectations indicator increased by 2.8 points to 79.7 points.

The proportion of Poles who think the country is heading in the right direction decreased by 2 points to 20%, but the number of those who expect Poland’s economic situation to deteriorate in the next 12 months declined to 42% from 48%. Furthermore, fewer Poles say that the domestic economic situation has deteriorated during the last 12 months (about half, down from 55% in December), and that the financial situation of their own household has worsened over this period (33%, down from 39%). The percentage of Poles who think now is the right time to buy durable goods edged up to 14% from 12%, and the number who expect they will be unable to make any savings during the next 12 months declined to 70% from 73%.

The CCI index is measured on a scale from 0 to 200, based on a survey of a representative random-quota sample of 1,000 Poles aged 15 and above.
