Fewer job cuts at Philips’ Pila factory

The scale of the planned lay-offs at the Pila (Wielkopolskie voivodship) plant of Philips Lighting will be a quarter smaller than initially thought, the company’s spokesperson told Polish Press Agency on 28 January.

In December the group announced the axing of 320 jobs, or just over 10% of the workforce, at its factory of light bulbs in Pila in response to tougher market conditions created by a Europe-wide phase-out of traditional incandescent bulbs. However, following talks with trade unions the figure has been reduced to 246 production and non-production jobs, or about 8% of the total.

The Pila plant is one of the biggest manufacturers of conventional light bulbs in the world. At present it employs 3,056 people, more than any other company in the region.

Philips has so far invested €450m in the plant.
