SPAR to open 50 stores a year

SPAR, a global foodstore chain based in the Netherlands, plans to add minimally 50 stores in Poland in the course of 2013 and to maintain a similar rate of network expansion in the years to come, Wojciech Bystron, CEO of SPAR Polska, told According to Mr. Bystron, there is potential in the country for more than 1,000 SPAR stores.

The company, which in late October opened its 100th store in Poland, has so far been present in the southern half of the country, but now that its Polish partner, Bac-Pol, has gained a nationwide logistics network following a merger with Ango, SPAR stores will spread to new geographies north of the Warsaw-Poznan line, Mr. Bystron said. The focus will be mainly on organic growth, though M&A deals are not ruled out, he added.

SPAR, an organisation of independent retailers and wholesalers, is operating in over 30 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia and has over 12,000 stores worldwide.
