Sharp exits Pomeranian zone as plant fails to meet job targets

2013-01-13

The Ministry of the Economy has approved a request by Sharp, the Japanese LCD supplier, for its manufacturing plant in Ostaszewo (Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship) to be unregistered from the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone (PSSE). Witalis Korecki, manager of the Ostaszewo plant, said the decision was motivated by tough market conditions. He was quick to add that there were no plans to shut the factory, however.

Sharp has been struggling to meet its original job creation obligations in Ostaszewo. The Japanese company, which entered the zone in 2006, had initially pledged to have 3,000 people in employment there by the end of 2013. However, with declining orders, the plant has been bleeding jobs and at present employs just over 1,000 people.

It is not clear whether Sharp will be asked to return the state aid it received in the form of tax exemptions.

Sharp’s problems have already led to job cuts at two local suppliers, Sumika and Orion Electric Poland.
