Ipsos: consumer confidence slumps in December

The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) slipped by more than six points in December, to just under 72 points, according to research conducted by Ipsos. The CCI thus more than reversed the rally from November to reach its lowest level this year.

All the component indicators of the CCI deteriorated in December, led by the economic climate indicator, which gauges opinions about the domestic economy and outlook. It slumped by 9.3 points compared with November, to 55.2 points, as the proportion of Poles expressing concerns that the economic situation will worsen in the next 12 months rose to 48% from 38%, with the number saying that things in the country are heading in the right direction down to 22% from 24%.

The current indicator, which reflects sentiment about the present state of the economy and the financial situation of the respondent’s household, fell by 5.7 points to 60.6, reflecting an increase in the percentage of respondents who say the economic situation has worsened over the past 12 months (55%, up from 49%).

The willingness-to-buy indicator decreased by 4.2 points to 83.1 points. The share of the respondents who say the financial situation of their household has worsened over the past 12 months rose to 39% from 34%.

As a result, the expectations indicator shed 6.8 points to 76.9. The percentage of Poles who think now is the right time to buy durable goods fell to 12% from 15%, and the number who think they will be able to make some savings during the next 12 months declined to 14% from 19%.

The CCI index is measured on a scale from 0 to 200. The latest survey was conducted between 6 and 14 December 2012 on a representative random-quota sample of 1,000 Poles aged 15 and above.
