Philips cuts jobs in Pila in response to EU regulations

2012-12-18

Philips Lighting Poland has notified trade unions about plans to axe 316 jobs, or about 10% of the workforce, at its factory of light bulbs in Pila (Wielkopolskie voivodship), citing the need to adapt to a new market environment created by a EU-wide phase-out of traditional incandescent bulbs. The lay-offs will be implemented until April 2013.

The Pila plant is one of the biggest manufacturers of conventional light bulbs in the world. At present it employs 3,056 people, more than any other company in the region.

Philips has so far invested €450m in the plant.
