Fiat supplier to axe 120 jobs?

Johnson Controls, a US manufacturer of components and solutions for the automotive sector, has notified trade unions about plans to cut 120 jobs, or about a quarter of the workforce, at its factory of vehicle seats in Bierun (Slaskie voivodship), it emerged on 11 December. According to unions leaders, the decision has to do with Fiat’s recent announcement that production at its car factory in Tychy, Bierun’s main customer, would remain at a low level due to weak demand, necessitating the elimination to 1,500 jobs (see the news item "Fiat slashes jobs in Tychy"). The lay-offs at Johnson Controls will reportedly affect 94 production workers, as well as about 30 positions in logistics, quality control and administration. As in Tychy, the redundancies are to commence in January and to last until the end of March.

There was no official confirmation from Johnson Controls, whose executives are due to meet union leaders on 18 December.

The Bierun plant employs 500 people.

Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls employs 170,000 people worldwide.
