Fiat slashes jobs in Tychy

Fiat Auto Poland on 7 December announced plans to axe 1,500 jobs, or a third of the workforce, at its car factory in Tychy (Slaskie voivodship) in the first quarter of 2013, citing the need to adapt to weak car sales in Europe, particularly in the segment of compact cars. Italy, the plant’s key market, is doing especially badly.

According to the company’s estimates, output at the Tychy plant will drop below 300,000 vehicles in 2013, compared with about 350,000 in 2012 and with a peak of over 600,000 in 2009.

Substantial lay-offs had been widely expected but their proposed scale took trade unions at the Tychy factory by surprise. According to union leaders, the redundancies go farther than is justified by market conditions and have to do with the loss of Fiat Panda Classic, whose production was shifted to less efficient plants in Fiat’s home country.
