MEP’s Zabka targeting 5,000 stores in PLN 1.5bn expansion programme

Zabka, the retail group, plans to spend PLN 1.5bn (approx. €365m) on network expansion until 2018 thanks to financial support from owners Mid Europa Partners (MEP), CEO Jacek Roszyk said. Zabka’s store network, which currently counts more than 2,500 stores, including the eponymous convenience stores and Freshmarket supermarkets, is to reach 3,000 in 2013 and 5,000 over the next five years.

The strategic objective is to dominate the smaller retail formats in the big cities. A key priority is faster expansion of the Freshmarket chain, which is to double to over 400 stores already in 2013. Zabka will also invest in the remodelling of about 1,000 of its convenience stores and in expanding its logistics system. In 2013 the group plans to open a new distribution centre near Warsaw to serve its expanding business in this part of the country.

As a result of the expansion, which will rely mainly on organic growth, Zabka expects to achieve a more complete geographical spread. At present its main markets are the Silesia, Lodz, Poznan, Wroclaw and Krakow, and the group wants to increase its presence in parts of the south and the east.
