Alstom’s train unit completes PLN 33m capacity extension, will add 200 new jobs

2012-12-07

Alstom, the leading global manufacturer of transport infrastructure, on 6 December inaugurated two new industrial halls at Alstom Konstal, its Polish train-making subsidiary, in Chorzow (Slaskie voivodship). The project involved the erection of a new welding and assembly hall and a new paint shop and was worth nearly PLN 33m (approx. €8m). It doubled the factory’s painting capacity, thus preparing it for an anticipated increase in production next year as Alstom begins to fulfill a big order from Italian railways. The order is for 70 trains and the Chorzow facility is to produce most of them, starting in a few months’ time. The Italian contract will also require further modernisations. As a result, employment at the facility is expected to increase by more than a fifth over the next two years, to 1,100 in 2014 from about 900 at the moment.
