Auchan acquires Real stores in Poland, other CEE markets in €1.1bn deal


Groupe Auchan, the French retailer, on 30 November signed an agreement with Metro Group of Germany to buy Metro’s Real hypermarket business in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), including Poland. The value of the deal is €1.1bn.

The transaction covers operational activities and real estate assets in Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine. Real has 91 hypermarkets in these four countries (including 13 shopping malls), employs about 20,000 people and in 2011 generated revenues of over €2.6bn. In the future the Real stores in the CEE region will operate under the Auchan brand.

Vianney Mulliez, chairman of the Board of Directors of Groupe Auchan, said the acquisition would allow the group to balance its presence in Central and Eastern Europe, which is one of Auchan’s three priority development zones, alongside Western Europe and Asia.

In the words of Olaf Koch, CEO of Metro AG, Auchan offers good development perspectives for the Real hypermarkets and their employees.

The agreement is subject to antitrust approval and is expected to be completed in 2013.
