Registered unemployment rate up to 12.5% in October


The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.5% at the end of October, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is up 0.1 p.p. over September and 0.7 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just over 1.99 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 15,900 in relation to one month earlier and of 127,300 compared with October 2011. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (19.8%), Zachodniopomorskie (16.9%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (16.8%), Podkarpackie (15.2%), Lubuskie (14.9%), and Swietokrzyskie (14.7%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (9.2%), Mazowieckie (10.3%), Slaskie (10.5%), and Malopolskie (10.7%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a substantial decline in the number of job offers submitted by employers to labour offices as compared with the previous month, but a marked increase in annual terms (67,500 offers, down by 18.6% m-o-m, up by 23% y-o-y) .

There was an increase in overall redundancy plans both on a monthly and annual basis. At the end of October 534 entities were declaring an intention to shed a total of 37,900 jobs, including 9,800 in the public sector. By way of comparison, at the end of September the figures were 534 entities, 36,500 jobs and 10,000 in the public sector. At the end of October 2011 they were, respectively, 467, 30,900, and 16,400.

We forecast that at the end of 2012 the official jobless rate will be 13.2%.
