Deputy PM Pawlak resigns

Waldemar Pawlak on 19 November stepped down from the posts of Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister. His resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Mr. Pawlak decided to quit his cabinet posts after he was defeated in a leadership contest within his Polish Peasants Party (PSL), the junior coalition partner, two days previously.

The party will retain the economy portfolio, with a new PSL-backed Economy Minister to be appointed after 1 December, PM Tusk said after a meeting with Mr. Pawlak's successor as PSL leader, Janusz Piechocinski, adding that there would be no major cabinet reshuffle.

Mr. Piechocinski says he has no intention to join the government.

Mr. Pawlak was the motive force behind the economic deregulation bill enacted by the Sejm on 16 November – see the news item "Sejm passes business-friendly changes to VAT and other laws".
