President signs off on limits to tax reliefs

President Bronislaw Komorowski on 12 November signed into law an amendment to the Personal income tax act that reduces certain tax breaks for wage earners. The bill, which forms part of the government’s measures to raise tax revenue, first announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk in November 2011, will come into effect on 1 January 2013 and will apply to income earned from that date.

The amendment contains three changes. First, it ties eligibility and level of the family tax relief to a family’s income and number of children. It introduces higher reliefs for families with three children or more, while at the same time establishing an income ceiling for families with one child.

Second, it places significant restrictions on the tax-deductibility of internet access costs. And third, it imposes an income ceiling for applying the favourable calculation of tax-deductible costs available to those in the free professions.
