BASF invests €150m in catalysts production in Dolnoslaskie

BASF, the global chemicals group, on 6 November announced that it is investing €90m in the first step to build a factory of mobile emissions catalysts in Sroda Slaska (Dolnoslaskie voivodship), in the Legnica Special Economic Zone. The total value of the project is €150m and it is expected to create more than 400 new jobs by 2016.

The 40,000 m2 facility will be BASF’s largest in Europe. Construction work is scheduled to start before the end of this year, and the plant is due to begin operations in the first quarter of 2014. It will consist of 10 light duty and heavy duty production lines when it reaches its full planned capacity two years later.

The Sroda facility will make Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems and cutting-edge SCR on Filter solutions, BASF said. It will also house a regional sample laboratory and production line for the group’s Premair ozone destruction catalysts for automotive applications.

Rui Goerck, Senior Vice President, Mobile Emissions Catalysts at BASF, said the planned implementation of Euro 6 light duty and Euro VI heavy duty regulations in Europe would generate higher demand for advanced emissions control systems, and the group was more than doubling its production capacity on the continent to keep pace with this increased demand.

Dr. Joachim Meyer, Head of BASF Business Center Europe Central, said Poland was an attractive location for BASF to invest because of its central position in Europe and positive economic development.
