Unemployment at 12.4% in September

The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.4% at the end of September, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is unchanged from August and 0.6 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just under 1.98 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 14,300 in relation to one month earlier and of 117,300 compared with September 2011. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (19.5%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie and Zachodniopomorskie (16.7%), Lubuskie and Podkarpackie (15.1%), and Swietokrzyskie (14.8%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (9.1%), Mazowieckie (10.2%), Slaskie (10.4%), and Malopolskie (10.6%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a substantial increase in the number of job offers submitted by employers to labour offices, to 82,900 from 74,400 in August (and compared with 69,000 a year earlier).

There was also a decline in overall redundancy plans compared with the month before. At the end of September, 534 entities were declaring an intention to shed a total of 36,500 jobs, including 10,000 in the public sector. By way of comparison, at the end of August the figures were 488 entities, 39,300 jobs and 11,400 in the public sector. At the end of September 2011 they were, respectively, 465, 31,700 and 17,900.

We forecast that at the end of 2012 the official jobless rate will be 13.2%.
