Ipsos: consumer confidence weakens in September

2012-10-02

The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) fell by almost five points in September to stand at 74.5 points, its lowest level since February, according to research conducted by Ipsos. The company notes that the Index is sensitive not just to changes in economic conditions but also to media coverage.

All the component indicators of the CCI deteriorated in September. The economic climate indicator, which gauges opinions about the domestic economy and outlook, declined by almost seven points to 57.2, its worst reading so far this year. The current indicator, which reflects sentiment about the present state of the economy and the financial situation of the respondent’s household, fell 4.1 points to 63.9. The willingness-to-spend indicator decreased by 3.7 points to 86.1, and the expectations indicator dropped by 7.6 points to 76.8.

The proportion of Poles who say things in the country are heading in a bad direction rose by two points in September, to 72%, and the percentage who take the opposite view slipped to 21% from 22%.

The number who say the economic situation in Poland has worsened over the past 12 months was 54%, compared with 51% the month before; and 49% expect it to deteriorate further during the coming year, up from 43%. At the same time, the percentage of Poles who fear that the financial situation of their household will worsen over the next 12 months rose to 25% from 17%. Concerns about unemployment also grew, with 60% of the respondents anticipating the jobless rate to increase during the next 12 months, up from 55%.

The CCI index is measured on a scale from 0 to 200. The latest survey was conducted between 6 and 13 September 2012 on a representative random-quota sample of 1,006 Poles aged 15 and above.
