Unemployment rate rises to 12.4% in August

The registered unemployment rate stood at 12.4% at the end of August, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. This is 0.1 p.p. higher than in July and 0.6 p.p. higher than in the corresponding month of the previous year.

In the analysed period, just over 1.96 million Poles were registered as unemployed, an increase of 11,500 in relation to one month earlier and of 109,400 compared with August 2011. The highest unemployment rates were noted in the voivodships of Warminsko-Mazurskie (19.3%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (16.6%), Zachodniopomorskie (16.5%), Podkarpackie (15.3%), and Lubuskie and Swietokrzyskie (14.9%). The lowest rates were recorded in Wielkopolskie (9.1%), Mazowieckie and Slaskie (10.2%), and Malopolskie (10.6%).

At the same time, GUS data showed a significant increase in the number of job offers submitted by employers to labour offices, to 74,400 from 64,400 in July (and compared with 72,600 a year earlier).

There was also a certain increase in redundancy plans, however. At the end of August, a total of 488 companies were declaring an intention to shed 39,300 jobs (including 11,400 in the public sector). By way of comparison, at the end of July the figures were 432 firms and 38,500 jobs (11,400 in the public sector); and at the end of August 2011 they were, respectively, 434, 37,300, and 23,600.

We forecast that by the end of 2012 the official jobless rate will exceed 13%.
